unSharpness of the Tendon Edges (STE)

In the absence of notable pathology, tendon edges should be well defined and distinguishable from the surrounding tissues. Blurring of the tendon edges occurs due to tendon inflammation, adjacent tissue damage and as a result of tendon injury.

This parameter assesses the degree to which the tendon edges are indistinct and do not separate clearly from the adjacent structures.

Assessment scale of changes in corresponding MRI images:

Normal stateMild changesModerate changesSevere changes
Very distinct sharpness of the tendon edges and clear demarcation from adjacent structuresVisible sharpness of the tendon edges and demarcation from adjacent structuresBlurring of the outline of the tendon border edgesComplete blurring of the outline of the tendon border edges with no visible demarcation from adjacent structures
